In Loving Memory

Advocate Matodzi Mavhungu

1998 — 2024 · lovingly known as "Ntsako"

This firm rises, in part, to honour a legacy that refused to be small. The youngest of eight children, Matodzi earned a full scholarship to the University of Limpopo — the very halls that shaped our own Director — and there he gave more than he took: tutoring his peers, standing as a student activist, and co-founding the African Law Projects to fight the financial exclusion of the students who would follow him.

Called to the Bar in 2021 and admitted through the Johannesburg Society of Advocates, he built his practice at the Duma Nokwe Group of Advocates. In a career measured in only a handful of years, he appeared as counsel in matters of national consequence and earned reported judgments as lead counsel — and a court of this country saw fit to honour him in the very pages of its judgment.

A fatal collision took him on 4 August 2024, at just twenty-six. Yet those who knew him remember his humility, his laughter, and his conviction that the law must serve the vulnerable. That conviction is the foundation on which Rangoato & Associates is built.

"The measure of a great advocate is not the years they are given, but the lives they change with the time they have."

— In honour of a dear colleague & friend, whose memory inspired this firm.
